R-Ratings for Various Building Materials

R-Values are used to measure the resistance ("R" for resistance) building materials have to the flow of heat through them. The higher the R-Value, the harder it is for heat to get through. So the higher the R-Value, the better a substance is as a thermal insulator. The following is a list of R-Values for various building materials:

Material R-Value
brick (8" thick) 0.88
brick (12" thick) 1.32
clay/dirt (12" thick) about 2.5
concrete blocks (8" thick) 1.72
concrete blocks (12" thick) 1.89
stucco (1/2" thick) 0.10
fiberglass (blankets & bats) 3.33
wood (1/2" thick) 0.62
Polystyrene Boards 3.45
